Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Aegis Online, online only? Can I use it on a screen just for maps in my game?
A: No, you do not need to be connected to the Internet for Aegis Online to work.

Q: Will Aegis Online support Hex grids?
A: Aegis Online will support Hex grids, square grids and any other grid shape you can make with a voronoi diagram. Currently it only works in arbitrary space or square grid.

Q: Will it support custom scripting or animation?
A: Currently python scripts can be put into the game to automate functions and features. There are some animations in there currently, and a long term goal is to support importing new ones.

Q: Will Aegis Online have line of sight and visibility options?
A: Yes. Using the python scripting it will be possible to turn off and on visibility for certain things, and do line of sight checks. An interesting feature I hope to have implemented is to have different players see different things. From illusions or invisible people, to different lore being in a tooltip for different characters. I call it creative desynchronization.

Q: I have a bug, is there a place to send a bug report?
A: There will be a form on this site later for detailed bug reporting, for now please email us.
Q: Is this related to (Other virtual tabletop)?
A: No. The only program it is associated with is Blaster Girls, also from Easter Egg Productions.

Q: Why is it called "Aegis Online"
A: In college the founders of EEP made a 7x4ft octagonal whiteboard table. It looked like a shield and was dubbed "The Aegis." So when I made a tabletop program to game with that same group of friends, the name followed naturally.

Q: What ruleset will be supported?
A: None. Aegis Online is made to be very generic, so it can work with any tabletop game ever made. Custom scripts can be made to facilitate one game, but by itself, Aegis will be for all tabletop games.

Q: How well would this work with slower internet?
A: Aegis Online was built with slow internet and bandwidth caps in mind. It should work reasonably well with such limitations, aside from when it transfers files to new people connecting.

Q: How big can the maps be?
A: Aegis Online uses a dynamic 'grid' system. Please do not make grids larger than 250x250 units across (About a quarter mile with 5ft units). You can have multiple grids and lay them out so it looks like it goes on farther. It was made this way for naval combat games. Airships moving about and people moving on them.

Q: Does Aegis Online update automatically?
A: No. We hope to have Aegis Online on steam in the future, but until then it must be downloaded and updated manually from the download link.

Q: When will the next build be out?
A: Aegis Online is on a loose monthly release schedule. There are no hard dates currently.

Q: It is open source?
A: No. However, various example scripts will be available and free to mod.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Aegis Online is free and I plan to keep it that way. However, a marketplace for content is planned. So people can share or sell miniatures or rules (python scripts) that they have made.

Q: Can I support the development somehow?
A: Yes. Check out our patreon page.

Q: What operating system does it run on?
A: Currently Windows builds are available. Mac and Linux builds will be available as soon as it's on steam. Aegis Online has been tested with windows back to 7.

Q: What is Easter Egg Productions?
A: I am a dreamer, and hope to make many more video games and other things in the future. Easter Egg Productions is the banner that will be under. Right now it's just me, and a few friends helping out how they can.

Q: Where can I get it?!
A: Right here!
